Full Ride Scholarships for Athletes

March 4, 2026 by personalcollege

Did you know that only 6 to 7 percent of student athletes go on to play for a college/university?

Even with our smaller sampling, PCCI still manages to achieve an athletic placement rate of 9 percent.

Here are a few things student athletes and their families may not be aware of. Only Division 1 schools give full scholarships – otherwise known as “full rides” for athletics. Division 2 schools offer a few athletic scholarships. Division 3 schools do not offer any scholarship money.

Does your student qualify for a full ride? What does it take?

A student has to work really hard at putting themselves in front of coaches.

Student athletes should document their performance and progress, have video ready to back it up, contact the coaches multiple times in advance and let them know they’re coming to the school. And brace yourself, as you’ll likely not hear back from many coaches, if any.

Yes, your chances of athletic placement sound bleak, and chances of a full ride are pretty slim.

Academic performance will influence admission decisions. First and foremost, you want to be a good fit academically for a school. If you are academically qualified, then you should determine if you’ll be a good fit for the team’s roster. For example, if everyone on the volleyball team is

6’2” tall and you’re closer to 5’2”, then that team is likely not looking for you.

Is the roster stacked with upperclassmen? If it’s stacked with Seniors and Juniors, then you have a better chance of gaining a place on the team. If there are mainly Sophomores and Freshmen, there will be less of an opportunity of an opening for you.

To increase your chances of getting recruited, toss your net wide. For example, if you reside in the New England area, go beyond just the New England states. It’s so hard to get recruited. The more open you are, the better.

Athletes have to be go-getters. Are you up for the challenge?
